A friend tagged me recently in one of those “25 Random Things About Me” lists on Facebook, and I thought it could make a fun writing exercise. I feel like I’ve been experiencing a bit of writer’s block ever since I caught Covid in October. For a few weeks, it was a full-on brain fog but now I just can’t always seem to organize my thoughts creatively. I hope this will help generate some ideas and keep me in the habit of sitting down to write for another day. So, here are…
25 Random Things About Me
- A friend once told me about a time her family was rushing out the door to go on vacation, and one person ducked into the bathroom for a really quick pee upstairs. They eventually returned home to find that the toilet had overflowed and flooded everything. Ever since then, I never flush the toilet if I’m on my way out the door.
- As a teenager, I was obsessed with unusual names and loved “Tangerine” for a girl.
- My dad went to college with Lorenzo Music, the original voice of Garfield. (I believe he said they were in ROTC together.)
- I tried teaching myself to play the ukulele during the pandemic, but haven’t really practiced much since becoming a parent.
- My first concert was the Koncert for Kosovo benefit in 1999. I was so excited to see Ben Folds Five and Fountains of Wayne play live!
- My favorite comfort shows are probably The Office, Boy Meets World, Scrubs, Full House, 30 Rock, and Quantum Leap.
- I had a falling out with a friend as a teenager and we never really spoke again. She ended up dying young, and I sometimes wonder if I should have reached out to her again before she passed.
- I love grapefruit. It began in high school, when the band was selling fruit for a fundraiser. Somehow, it was decided that this would make a really funny gag gift for one of our friends. I ordered the biggest crate of grapefruit they had, but the friend suddenly moved away before it arrived and I ended up eating the whole thing myself. I don’t think I’d ever actually tried grapefruit before then, but after a few weeks I was hooked!
- I’d like to visit Canada one day.
- My perfect day is doing something outside with my family.
- I’m a saver.
- I’m really good at turning a few random food items into a halfway decent meal.

- My favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip.
- My first job was working at the YMCA.
- I love an opportunity to bake, cook, or be crafty.
- Once in college, I drank a cup of ranch dressing in exchange for $5.
- My first celebrity crush was Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
- My name in German class was Christa.
- I made up this joke a long time ago and it still sort of tickles me: (Q) What do you call a Shirley Temple made with Coke? (A) A Shirley Temple Black. (Note: I think this drink is actually called a Roy Rogers.)
- I’ve never had my ears pierced. As a kid, I was too afraid of needles. And now it just doesn’t seem important enough to bother with.
- I’ve known most of my best friends since I was a kid.
- In tenth grade, I won third place in an art contest for a drawing of Robert Frost’s head on a moth body.
